I really enjoy attend English class today. In this the teacher also sat with us instead of talk in the front like regular class. Like a meeting with friendly situation. He let us talk each other using our miserable english while he guide the topic. We talk about employment and working environment. While learning to make a conversation we also get to know each other.
I usually afraid to speak using english because I don’t have a friend or family who speak english. So I still feel awkward to start talking (Although I can’t stop talking when explaining about physics to 5th grade student). But this class concept make me feel very comfortable to talk although I know I make some mistake using grammar and pronounce my words. So, it is not your fault if you don’t understand about what I’m talking about. Confident is the key. So, by learn to speak english I also try too boost my confident. No mistake no gain. I really appreciate if you have time to correct my english grammar in this article.
About the class concept. I imagine a science class like this. The teacher sit together with the student on a round table or interact with the nature outside the class. Do an experiment and let the student observe and explain what they see. The teacher guide them by giving a question that make them curious and want to dig more. In this method knowledge is not the most important thing. It is about how student experience research and train them to be a self learner. Knowledge changes with time and many are influence by interest and situation.
I have an opportunity to teach science in a private school in Jakarta. I never experience teaching in a class before, so I fell awkward to imagine myself stand in the front and talking for 40 minutes explaining science. Rather than explaining from beginning I prefer give them problem to solved. Something to experience and observe by themself while I give them hint to make the way. I did this before with my cousin who still 3rd grade and he seems enjoy it because I make it like he doing a riddle. If you teach a primary student using this method it will take many time and effort. So, in a class where time and subject limited by curriculum this method do not work at all. School has target to make student pass national exams with good score. My method do not work that way.
But I ruined my first experience by explaining too much because I enjoy the student asking many question. 5th grade student with curious face while listen to my explanation looks adorable. So instead of 40 minutes given time I talk for about 80 minutes (greedy!! sorry for the actual teacher for this). I feel sorry because too much explanation won’t make them understand about science, they won’t feel the spirit of science that way. I bet after the class they wouldn’t remember anything except the short experiment we have done during the class. But, as I observe this private school has good method to teach science with limited time and space that they have. The student seems enjoyable and quite active. Something that I don’t see when attend general school.
It was a good experience anyway.
